Giovanni Michelucci: khufu's solar ship museum at the great pyramid of giza, cairo. 1957-1962 - Italian/English
On 26 May 1954, Egyptian archaeologists led by Kamal el-Malakh discovered, at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, a long pit covered by large stone blocks. The exceptional nature of the find led the Egyptian Government to decide to display it on the very site of its discovery, through the construction of a purpose-built museum that was also to incorporate the pit in which the boat had lain for millennia. For this reason, the Egyptian Government chose the Roman architect Franco Minissi, whose museumisation projects had made him a pioneer of archaeological museography.
